What's actually happening

Why you bloat after eating

Most people talk about bloating as one thing. It isn't. It's an ordinary process with four stages, and discomfort can turn up at any of them. Here's the route a meal takes, and where it tends to go wrong.

01

Before you've even swallowed

Digestion starts in your mouth. Chewing does the first part of the work, saliva does the rest. Eat fast, talk through dinner, drink fizzy — and you swallow air along with food.

02

The next two to four hours

Your stomach turns the meal into a paste. A big or rich one takes longer, which is why the discomfort from Sunday lunch doesn't arrive at Sunday lunch. It arrives at four o'clock.

03

The part you never feel

In the small intestine, enzymes and bile finish breaking food into pieces small enough to absorb. Most of it gets through. Whatever doesn't (e.g. lactose, certain fibres) passes into the large intestine still intact.

04

Gas, and nowhere to go

There, bacteria ferment what's left. Fermentation makes gas. That's the bloat. Gas takes up space, your gut stretches, and that's what you feel. Enough gas and your abdomen expands too — the difference between feeling bloated and looking it.
